Tuba Dr. Richard Sorenson
was Emeritus Professor of Music, Director of Bands and Head of the Music
Department at Western Oregon University where he taught for over thirty
years before retiring in 1999. He received his early musical training
on piano and tuba in Spencer , Iowa . He has a B.A. degree from the University
of Northern Iowa , M.Mus.Ed. from the Eastman School of Music of the University
of Rochester and a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado . He taught instrumental
music in the public schools of Iowa for four years before pursuing his
doctoral degree at the University of Colorado where he was graduate instructor
of tuba. He accepted the job of director of bands at Oregon College of
Education (now Western Oregon University ) in the fall of 1969. While
teaching at WOU he served as president of the NW division of the College
Band Directors Association and Vice President of the Oregon Music Educators
Association and was active as a clinician and adjudicator. He continues
to be active in retirement playing tuba with the Salem Concert Band and
the Capital Brass Quintet in addition to being conductor of the Willamette
Valley Concert Band since January of 1972. He also serves on the board
of the Salem Concert Band, Lutheran Fine Arts Center in Salem and the
Monmouth-Independence Community Arts Association. He also served on the
board of the Smith Fine Arts Series at WOU including a year as president
of the board.
