AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION
This year we celebrate
the 35th anniversary of MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS, first performed December
22, 1974 in New York City's Rockefeller Center. Harvey Phillips, a renowned
tuba performer and teacher, created TUBACHRISTMAS to honor his mentor,
the late great tubist William J Bell (born Christmas Day, 1902). Many
of the first carols, especially arranged for the first TUBACHRISTMAS by
American composer Alec Wilder (died Christmas Eve, 1980) are still played
today. TUBACHRISTMAS has since expanded to international proportions performed
in over 200 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign
countries.
TUBACHRISTMAS ensembles attract multiples of 100 participants aged 8 to
85+ years. The warm, rich organ-like sound of the tuba-euphonium choir
has won the ears and hearts of every audience and has become a Christmas
tradition in cities throughout the world. This is certainly the case for
the SALEM TUBACHRISTMAS.
On December 24, Christmas Eve Day, our traditional date, 12:00 PM, we
are expecting 150+ tuba players to perform on stage in our 19th year of
the Salem TubaChristmas. John Richards will again conduct the mighty tubas,
and of course add his witty quips and information. The first Salem TubaChristmas
was held in the Oregon State Capitol Rotunda in 1990. TubaChristmas was
moved to the Elsinore Theatre after damage occurred to the Capitol Building
by an earthquake in 1993. This year we have moved our Salem TubaChristmas
to the Salem Armory to provide double the seating capacity. The past two
years tickets were sold out a few weeks after going on sale, which meant
many people were not able to attend this Salem tradition. There are two
parking lots adjacent to the Salem Armory. The Armory parking lot is south
of the Armory building. The other lot for audience will be the Oregon
State Fairgrounds parking lot to the north of the Armory. We suggest carpooling
to the event as there will be a $5.00 parking fee.
A $4.00 admission will be charged again this year to help cover operating
costs. Tickets will first go on sale November 2, 2008 at the Salem Concert
Band's season opener fall concert, CELTIC CELEBRATION II, at the Historic
Elsinore Theatre. The doors will open at 11:00 AM for seating at our Salem
TubaChristmas.
Non-perishable packaged or canned food may be brought to TubaChristmas
for the Marion-Polk Food Bank. Items of pet food for the Humane Society
of the Willamette Valley will also be accepted. Items brought for the
Food Bank are not in lieu of the admission charge.
TubaChristmas
is not included in the Salem Concert Band Season Ticket Purchase.
