The
River - It may never take a breath, but this character has a life
of its own.
"Never
in his life had [Mole] seen a river before - this sleek, sinuous,
full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with
a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh ... All was a-shake and a-shiver
- glints and gleams and sparkles, rustle and swirl, chatter and
bubble."
Ratty
and Mole - These mismatched but entertaining friends meet at the
river and together embark on a journey that leads them on many adventures.
"When
they got home, the Rat made a bright fire in the parlour, and planted
the Mole in an armchair in front of it, having fetched down a dressing
gown and slippers for him, and told him river stories till suppertime
The
day was only the first of similar ones for the emancipated Mole,
each of them longer and fuller of interest as the ripening summer
moved onward."
Mister
Toad - Made famous (or infamous?) by the wild Disneyland ride, Mr.
Toad is loud, greedy and accident-prone, yet loves a good adventure,
a fast car and a cheerful song!
"When
the Toad--came--home!
There was smashing in of window and crashing in of door,
There was chivvying of weasels that fainted on the floor,
When the Toad--came--home!
Bang! go the drums!
The trumpeters are tooting and the soldiers are saluting,
And the cannon they are shooting and the motor-cars are hooting,
As the--Hero--comes!"
Ulysses
the Badger - He is a wise and natural-born leader, though also an
elusive hermit. The Badger leads his small "army" comprised
of Ratty, Mole, and Toad to break up a gang of mischievous weasels!
"The
Badger drew himself up, took a firm grip of this stick with both
paws, glanced round at his comrades, and cried - 'The hour has come!
Follow me!' And flung the door wide open
the mighty Badger,
his whiskers bristling, his great cudgel whistling through the air."
